Slate

Slate is etch-resistant, but may scratch and stain if not sealed properly. Because of its natural formation in layers, slate is very hard and difficult to break.

  • Appearance: Different shades of slate include green, black, dark red, gray, or even mottled purple.

Slate is a metamorphic rock that is typically formed from shale deposits. Because of its nature, it can easily be split into thin piece—hence its use as roofing material. Slate is most frequently used for floors, fireplace surrounds and hearths, bathroom applications, and, sometimes, countertops. Slab sizes are usually on the small side which is something to consider if selecting it for a larger area.
