Earlier this year, we told you all about Marsala, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2015. So, where is this rich wine-like shade when it comes to home color trends? Is it the big hit it was predicted to be?

Actually this fall/winter’s “it” color is a slightly evolved version of Marsala. However, it’s a color that’s familiar, warm, and a little bit spicy. The hot color for this season is burgundy. Popping up in fashion and in home furnishing collections (for both accessories and fixtures), burgundy is a gender-neutral color with universal appeal. It’s also exceptionally versatile in that it can be romantic and zesty as well as warm and welcoming.

Incorporating a bit more red than Marsala’s purple-saturated hue, burgundy offers a milder version of maroon. It’s even one of this fall’s top wedding color trends. Plus, burgundy pairs beautifully with another very popular color we’re seeing everywhere this fall—navy blue. Both of these rich colors are gorgeous in the kitchen and bath, especially as countertop materials. In fact, countertops, in general, are a great place to add a pop of unexpected color.
