Marble Takes the Cake

“Marble” cakes by KUFcakes look good enough to decorate with!
For centuries, marble, as a building material, has signified beauty, warmth, and elegance. But what about as a... dessert?
As recently featured in Architectural Digest, designer Kia Utzon-Frank bakes cakes that look like they are made of marble. Equal parts sculpture, accessory, and dessert, they’re created with a marzipan printer—a technological development makes these gravity-defying treats look like one of the world’s most recognizable building materials.
But unlike a cake, real marble will stand the test of time. It’s an exquisite choice for any room in the house, especially the kitchen. Sure, marble requires a bit of love and care, but it exudes a warmth and luxury that’s well worth the little bit of extra effort.

The fine crystals inside of a marble slab give it a snowy or satiny look, and the colors and veining patterns can be quite dramatic. While some homeowners prefer pristine and want their surfaces to look “brand new” at all times, others adore the patina that marble develops over time. Aged marble slabs are truly one-of-a-kind and as long as customers are properly educated on how to take care of it, marble can go a long way in adding beauty and value to the home.
Marble’s luminescence can help to make even a small kitchen feel larger. White marble, in particular, gives a kitchen an overall clean, pure, and graceful look. Plus, everyone knows that marble is one of the most expensive countertop materials available, which infuses instant luxury wherever it’s found.
Bakers and pastry chefs have a strong preference for marble worktops. Marble countertops stay cool, which keeps the butter in pastry layers from melting and prevents the dough from getting too soft. It’s perfect for rolling out piecrust, pizza dough, and pastries. It’s also pretty resistant to heat, so it won’t scorch easily if you place a hot cookie sheet down without a potholder or towel.
It takes superior skill to create a quality, detailed countertop with often-intricate custom edge profiles. Marble can be tricky for inexperienced fabricators. It’s softer and more delicate than granite and other stones. At Marble & Granite, Inc., we work only with the most skilled craftsmen who know the attributes of each individual stone and use their talents to bring out the unique beauty of each one.
